The mountain villages La Quinta and Taucho

This great circular hike starts in the small mountain village of La Quinta. Not far from La Quinta is Taucho. This round also leads you through this. In both mountain villages much of their original Canarian architecture is still preserved.

If you are not hiking through the villages anyway, it is always worth a detour into the small side streets. There, Tenerife is really still original. In Taucho you can also admire a large street painting along the main road.

Starting point of the hike is the church square of La Quinta. There you will find a large old threshing floor and the chapel of Santa Margarita. It dates back to the late 16th century. The little chapel experienced periods of prosperity, but also times when it was abandoned and empty. It was renovated in 1928. Another renovation was carried out by the town of Adeje in 2010. Although the chapel was not built in the old style, it still contains old paintings from its founding years.

Circular walk La Quinta

With its almost 16 kilometres, this circular hike is a bit of a challenge. But don’t worry, if that’s too long for you, there are also small rounds around La Quinta and Taucho. Just look under the point variants. Beside the big roundtrip I also present a small roundtrip around La Quinta. After you have left La Quinta and Taucho behind you, you will go uphill towards Caldera for a while. You pass gardens, fields and vineyards. At altitude you will be rewarded with magnificent views.

You cross some gorges and later hike through pine forest for a while. Finally it goes downhill again and you reach the main hiking trail between Adeje and Ifonche. The tour description can be found here. On the way back you follow this trail up to a rock ridge (Boca del Paso). Here you leave the path to return to La Quinta through a Barranco and then through fields.

Starting point and approach

Starting point of the hike is the church square of La Quinta.

Arrival by car

From the south take the TF-1 and then continue on the TF-82, from the north take the TF-82. At Los Menores turn off towards the mountains (Taucho). In many serpentines you first go up to Taucho. From there you continue on the main road to the starting point of the hike to La Quinta. Coming from the south you can also drive uphill at Adeje via La Moraditas towards La Quinta. In La Quinta there are parking places on the church square.

Arrival by bus

There is no bus connection from Adeje or Los Menores to Taucho or La Quinta. So you could alternatively take the bus to Los Menores or Adeje and take a taxi from there. You can find more information about the bus connections on Tenerife on the Titsa Homepage.

Time

I don’t like to give general time information for hiking tours, because the times are very individual. We needed with some breaks for this big hike almost 5.5 hours. The alternative small tour, however, can be done with breaks in about 2 hours.

Difference in altitude and distance

The height difference of the big tour is almost 700 meters and the distance is about 15.5 kilometers long. For the small tour the difference in altitude is about 300 meters and the distance is 7.5 kilometers long.

Requirement

The short hike is easy and for everyone with a little physical condition to master well. For the long circular hike you need a good physical condition, but otherwise it mostly leads over well developed hiking trails, driveways and roads.

Refreshment

A restaurant/bar is only available in Taucho. Therefore take enough water and food with you.

Variants

This tour can be combined well with various other hiking and circular walks in the vicinity, because the area around Taucho and La Quinta is a popular hiking area.
Here I introduce you to a big circular hike and a small hiking tour. But also the big circular hike can be shortened a little at some places. You can find hints in the text. Both tours can also be combined with the hike between Adeje and Ifonche. There is another very nice hike, which starts in Ifonche and can be ideally combined with this hike. I will present it here soon.

Great circular hike La Quinta

Section La Quinta to junction vineyard

You start your circular walk at the church square of La Quinta. From there, take the hiking trail to the left past the large old Dreschplatz. Then turn left into a path. You go past houses and then down a steep stony path on a slope to a road. You reach the road between Taucho and La Quinta. Follow this road to the right until you get to Calle Santa Margarita in the village of Taucho. At a fork, turn right and follow a road bend. Here you can also see the large painting. Shortly before the painting, a road (Calle Lomo de Caballo) branches off to the right.

Follow this road uphill for a very long time. It leads you along fields, houses and meadows. From time to time there are branches and roads, but you keep going straight uphill. You can also leave the road and take small shortcuts, but your direction is always uphill. On your left is Barranco Las Galgas, to which you ascend in parallel. Finally the path turns right and passes some vineyards. From up here you have a wonderful view down to the coast.

Section vineyards to Camino de Teresme

Now you cross the Barranco El Pinque in a small arc.  You cross three small side gorges and climb up again on the other side. Here you will come across some old houses, but also some newly renovated ones. You pass the houses. After a short time you descend into a small green gorge. This one should also be a branch of the Barranco El Pinque. But this time the whole gorge is very green. The path is partly overgrown, you walk along old canals and everything around you looks really wild and romantic. A beautiful remote place.

On the other side of the ravine you get back to a road at a farmstead. If you’ve had enough, you can simply go straight on and then right down again to La Quinta (another way to shorten the big round). For the big round, go around left and continue up the road. The path is partly very steep. Now you will also come to Kiefernwald for a while. The path brings you to the hiking trail PR-TF 71 Camino de Teresme.

Section Camino de Teresme to hiking crossroads

You could hike this one further uphill to the Caldera. You seem to have come a bit closer to Teide. But then a path branches right downhill into the Barranco de Calderón. Follow it and cross the Barranco in the upper part. Then you walk downhill on the other side. Here the path is a bit confusing. Keep to the point markings and cairns or use my GPS track. On the ridge next to the mighty Barranco de Calderón it is partly easy and especially at the end of the way also partly quite steep downhill.
Small houses and ruins along the way

In front of you you can already see Ifonche in the valley to the left. At the end of your descent you reach the big hiking trail PR-TF 71 between Adeje and Ifonche, which crosses many Barrancos. You can find a description of this hike here. Follow the trail to the right. This leads you into a mighty Barranco. You follow the path downhill and deep into the gorge, cross it and walk uphill again on the other side. Continue along the path that takes you up and down through many more small and medium-sized gorges. Finally you will reach a larger hiking trail with several branches.

Section of the trail crossing to the starting point La Quinta church square

Here you can go straight ahead on the small route directly back to La Quinta. Another possibility to take a short cut. But the big round leads you left on the ridge path. From here you have wonderful views of the south coast, the Conde and the mountains around Adeje. At the end of the ridge you come to Boca del Paso. Also here again beautiful views in all directions. An ideal resting place. The main hiking trail leads left down to Adeje.

However, you keep right downhill with the hiking trail PR-TF 71.1 in the direction of La Quinta. You first hike slightly downhill through the pine forest on the slope. There is also one last small Barranco crossing on this tour. Finally you come to a driveway, which you follow through fields and rather barren railings. This will take you back to La Quinta. On Calle La Serrería you get back to the church square.

La Quinta section to Barranco detour and back to the main hiking trail

You also start this hike at the church square and then walk along the hiking trail to the left past the large Dreschplatz. But now you don’t turn left to Taucho, but go straight on. The hiking trail always leads you along the edge of the Barranco and you have beautiful views in the direction of Taucho. Then the path turns a little to the right. You cross a road and continue straight ahead. It goes uphill. Keep left at a fork.

You get into pine forest and climb further up after a Barranco crossing. Finally you reach the main hiking trail Adeje-Ifonche, which you follow for a while. You cross small gorges in the pine forest. Then a small path branches off to the right of the path. Follow this path for a while until you reach the edge of a large Barranco. Here you can enjoy beautiful views. Then follow the same path back to the main path Adeje – Ifonche.

And finally

I hope you will enjoy these tours around La Quinta and Taucho. There are actually countless possibilities to combine the tours. Whichever one you choose for yourself, I wish you lots of fun on all your hikes,
